The Inaugural Sunflower Ball

“The Sunflower Ball was our first major fundraising event after we became a registered charity. The evening was hosted by Dublin GAA superstar Michael Darragh McAuley at the Newgrange Hotel in Navan.”

The night was filled emotion, It was full of fun, tears and laughter. We hosted out first ever sunflower awards, these awards went to people who have played a significant part in sarcoma cancer Ireland.

These awards went to the Wallace family, who lost their son/brother Lee. Angela is one of our founding members and is an active volunteer along with her daughter Dawn. The funds that they generously donated was the seed money for SCI.

The next award went to the Hilmi family, who lost their son/brother Shaun. Geraldine is relentless in her awareness and fundraising efforts. I don’t think there is a single person in their home town who doesn’t know what sarcoma is thanks to the Hilmi family.

Our final sunflower award went to Ann butler, who lost her father. Ann is an accredited psychotherapist and offered her services to SCI. She facilitates the monthly support group which has been running for 3 years, she also sees patients and family members on a one to one basis.

Our first sarcoma ambassador award was presented to Deirdre Lawlor, Deirdre became the first sarcoma cancer Ireland ambassador. Deirdre was a founding member and board member until Sept 2024. Her valuable insight into the charities sector was a guiding hand in our set up stages, We genuinely wouldn’t be were we are without her help. We felt that Deirdre was the perfect person to become our first ambassador.

On the night we had a chat with a sarcoma patient Gino, who has been a patient since 2016. Ginos story is amazing but its attitude that shines through. He is absolutely amazing and he had the whole room enthralled by his words.

On the night we danced for hours to the fantastic Who’s Eddie? Live band. They had the floor full from start to finish. We had an auction of some signed Jerseys and music Merchendise.

Our raffle was full of fun, there was a lot of excitement for people hoping to win a power washer! Our top prize on the night was a hotel voucher which was generously donated by Ainne Glorney in memory of her loving husband Bert.

‘Throughout the night, people were chatting and mingling, A lot of people felt that they had found a loving community that understood the complexities of dealing with this rare cancer. It was fantastic to sit in a room, Eating delicious food, listening to these stories and feeling at home, the underlying feeling of the night was love and support.

I was told many times that night and the next morning that they cant wait until next years!
